about GRE@T-PIONEeR

PIONEERING EDUCATION IN NUCLEAR REACTOR PHYSICS AND SAFETY

Education in reactor physics and nuclear safety needs innovative change in order to keep up with demand for skilled nuclear scientists and engineers. Attracting new students is increasingly difficult so actions must be taken to strengthen the European graduate nuclear engineering education network and offer new, attractive and accessible training resources.

GRE@T-PIONEeR is a project which developed specialised education and training resources for post-graduate students in reactor physics and safety. The aim was to create an alliance aimed at teaching advanced and specialised reactor physics and nuclear reactor safety while making use of synergies between the different consortium members.

The project offeres materials which allow students to fully comprehend topics related to the physics, modelling and safety of nuclear reactors, with an emphasis on nuclear cores. By following the courses and hands-on training sessions, the students are able to perform nuclear reactor safety simulations and understand all the calculations behind these simulations.

GRE@T-PIONEeR also collaborates with ENEN for the coordination of nuclear education and training. Most of the GRE@T-PIONEeR partners are members of ENEN.

The GREAT-PIONEER earlier received funding from the European Union’s Euratom research and training programme 2019-2020 under the Grant Agreement n°890675, from 2020 to 2024.

The GREAT-PIONEER has received funding from the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (Strålsäkerhetsmyndigheten) under the project number SSM2024-9693, from 2024 to 2028.

STUDENT FEEDBACK

Project Impacts

A SKILLED WORKFORCE

Securing the availability of competence, knowledge and skills at the graduate level in reactor physics and nuclear reactor safety.

EXPERTISE FROM AROUND THE WORLD

Fully integrate hands-on training exercises in the educational resources, using the research and training infrastructures of the partners.

SOLUTIONS FOR INDUSTRY

Offering short period courses, so that they also fit attendees from the industry, without compromising a deep learning approach to the covered topics.

ACCESSIBLE & INNOVATIVE EDUCATION

Teaching reactor physics and nuclear reactor safety using new pedagogical methods relying on flipped classroom and blended learning in general and using distant learning techniques facilities as much as possible, thus making it possible to offer the courses to any student.

ACCESS TO EXPERT EDUCATORS

Creating a set of coherent courses where the teachers bring their respective expertise.

A LONG-TERM INITIATIVE

GRE@T-PIONEeR created the necessary conditions to make the alliance sustainable in the long run.
